Product Description From an early stage, Damascus played a crucial political, commercial, and cultural role on the world stage. A center for both agriculture and craft industries, and a crossing-point for caravan tracks, mountain passes, and trade routes from the Indian and Chinese worlds, East Africa, Anatolia, Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Red Sea, Damascus also maintained close contact with the Mediterranean world through its natural ports of Tyre and Acre. Degeorge's study addresses how the city adapted to this key geographical position and how it related to the West. He departs from the uniquely ethnocentric point of view that often dominates current studies of the region and offers a more global perspective taking into consideration the acts of the local people, the views of western travelers and political figures, and the impressions and observations of fellow Syrians and nearby residents from the Mahgreb. About the Author Gérard Degeorge is a historian and specialist in the study of Syria and of the Arab world in general. An experienced photographer of the Islamic world, and a civil engineer and architect, he teaches at the école d'Architecture de Paris-la-Seine. The author has published several scholarly works, including Ornament and Decoration in Islamic Architecture (Thames & Hudson, 2000), The Art of the Islamic Tile (Flammarion, 2002), and Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva (Flammarion, 2003).
